Alexander Technique

Tom Koch invites you to experience the technique used for over a century by actors, singers, dancers, musicians, scientists and managers to improve performance and appearance while increasing self confidence and well-being.

The Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a simple method for applying your rational mind to solve body problems. It makes even simple movements feel lighter and easier, helps alleviate pain and stiffness, and helps you maintain a clear and balanced state of mind.

How does the Technique work?

Sitting well is easy when you know how
Good body use is
a learnable skill

The Technique is based on the understanding that the tensional balance between the head, neck and back can either enhance or hinder the body’s postural reflexes. We can learn to control this tensional balance consciously, and thereby find an easier and more coordinated way of using our bodies, both in action and at rest. This conscious control of coordination gradually comes to replace our previously acquired habits that might be restrictive or even harmful.

How is the Technique taught?

Tom uses his hands to guide the head and neck to a better balance

Tom, like all Alexander teachers, uses his hands to direct your attention to how you are using or misusing the tensional balance in your body as you stand, bend, sit, and walk. Through gentle guidance and tactile feedback you first learn to stop disturbing your body’s proper head-neck balance. As you become more skilled at this we begin applying the technique while maintaining movement, such as walking, speaking, playing an instrument or writing. Most lessons also include time lying on a table while Tom uses his hands to help you release unnecessary tension in a rational and conscious manner. Even after only one lesson most people will feel a surprisingly positive difference in how their body moves.

There are no exercises or special equipment involved. Instead attention is paid to basic daily movements. As you progress, lessons can include any movement or activity you want to examine, whether playing a musical instrument, typing on a keyboard, making a speech, or performing an arabesque on point.

Certified Teacher

My neurologist recommended that I take Alexander lessons for my chronic RSI. with functionless hands and chronic pain. Now I am able to use my hands better, so much better that I was able to get a job working with computers. After a five year search I discovered the Alexander Technique. You don’t need medication, neurologists, physiotherapists, Mensendieck therapists and unemployment benefits. An occasional Alexander lesson will do the trick.
